ABOUT
Cardiology and Cardio Thoracic Department

Department of Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization at Breach Candy Hospital is one of the earliest departments in the country and was established in 1983. It has the unique distinction of performing first coronary angioplasty in India in February 1985. The department is headed by Dr. D.B. Pahlajani one of the seniormost Cardiologist of India and pioneer in invasive and interventional cardiology. It is equiped with state of the art Philips clarity cine angiography equipment with multiple detectors to perform high resolution coronary angiography. Through this equipment we are able to detect blocks in the coronary arteries in patients with heart attacks and perform coronary angioplasty with stenting to remove blocks to reestablish flow of blood to the heart. Since its inception it has performed more than 50000 diagnostic coronary angiography and angioplasty procedures with stents some of them very complex and challenging.

To optimize the results of stenting cardiologists routinely performs techniques like fractional flow reserve to decide whether the patient requires coronary angioplasty or not. To achieve the best results following angioplasty several times we perform intra vascular ultra sound procedures. Recently we have acquired latest OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography),equipment that guides us to optimize the results of stent deployment in the coronary arteries. Rotational Atherectomy is routinely performed in patients undergoing angioplasty of calcified arteries.

Pediatric Cardiology Procedures

The cardiac catheterization laboratory also routinely performs pediatric cardiology procedures like ASD,VSD and PDA ( holes in the heart) closures and valve dilation thus avoiding open heart surgery.

Electrophysiology

Pacemakers, defibrillators and electrophysiological procedures are routinely performed to correct the heart rhythm disturbances.

Neuro Intervention and Peripheral Procedures

Department has very active neuro intervention programme. Blocks in the arteries of the brain are dilated and stents are inserted in the arteries in the brain with 3D imaging. Various peripheral vascular defects aortic aneurysm and narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys and legs are tackled by stents and grafts without taking recourse to surgery.

Emergency Angioplasty for Acute Heart Attacks and Stroke Neurovascular Specialities.

The department has team of interventional cardiologists, well trained nurses, technicians and residents who are available on site or within short time round the clock to perform emergency coronary angioplasty and stenting or manage brain stroke within the " golden hour "when the patient is brought to the hospital with heart attack or impending heart attack or stroke.
